Summer sun and skin cancer, more and more, the two are becoming synonymous.

If you are planning to be outdoors in summer, where sunscreen, even on cloudy days.

Choose a sunscreen with zinc oxide or titanium dioxide as these compounds are not absorbed by the skin.  Slather it on thirty minutes before you go outside and re-apply every two hours.  Wherever possible, opt for SPF-30 or higher.

Broad spectrum sunscreens, those that protect against both UV-A and UV-B, guard against sunburn (caused by UV-A) and wrinkles (caused by UV-B).

Consider buying a sunscreen stick for the face and use around the eyes.

If you choose to use a spray, make sure you or your children hold their breath for at least five seconds not to inhale the spray.

Remember that covering up is an even better protection!

The sun's UV normally peaks from 10 am until 4 pm.  The best protection is to stay inside when UV is usually at its peak, from 11 am until 3 pm.

Pay attention to the UV forecast that is normally part of your weather broadcast, available online, on TV, and on many radio stations.

Be Prepared, Stay Safe!!

When researching this topic, I happened on this rather "adult humour" tongue and cheek guide to summer protection in the New Yorker.  If you want or need a laugh, check it out =)
