Another interesting thing I heard on BT last week was the results of another European study that indicated that general brain degeneration occurs earlier than had been previously thought.

Prevalent wisdom had human brain degeneration resulting in measurable loss when we are in our 60's, but the results of a recent study indicated that that loss might be measurable as early as 45. Brain degeneration starts much earlier, as young adults, but is virtually imperceptible until later in life.

Although this loss is partly a result of natural aging and genetics, there are factors that are within our control.

Activities and Health Care that improves the vascular system will generally also improve or reduces our "brain drain".

1) Exercise and reduction of fat in our diet (to recommended levels - too little fat in our diets can have negative effects) can be beneficial.

2) Use your brain. Keep on challenging yourself, continually learn new things.

3) There is evidence that the fatty fish oils found in fish like Salmon, Halibut, Cod, Tuna, Trout, Sardines etc are good for your brain. A rule of thumb we have tried to live with is to have two - three ounce servings of fish at least twice a week. There is some evidence of increased mercury levels in the larger ocean fish, so do your own research and/or discuss this with your health professional before choosing to change your diet.

4) Gingko Biloba and Co-Enzyme Q-10 are also thought to have properties beneficial to our brains.

5) Reduce STRESS in your life. Stress negatively affects many components of our lives and can affect our brains.

Like any new Health regimen, due diligence is in order. Research the topic for yourself and talk to your medical health practitioner before adopting any changes to your diet, supplements or physical activity.

Our choices can have consequences, and making "better" choices might result in "better" consequences, it is all up to us.
